Temple used a quick dose of frantic, full-court pressure to firmly push into Del Valle’s lead to start the fourth quarter, leaving the remainder of their non-district tilt to play out with plenty of drama as the final minutes unfolded Tuesday night.

And though the Wildcats had their shots to take control after pulling to within one possession with about 3 minutes left, most of those looks went unfulfilled — including DJ Nelson’s potential game-tying 3-pointer from the top of the key with 16 seconds remaining — allowing the visiting Cardinals to hold on for a narrow 47-42 victory at loud Wildcat Gym.

“The kids fought hard to give us a chance to win the game. That’s what I was most proud about. They didn’t quit. They fought back,” said Temple head coach Joey Martin, whose team was paced by Jamarion Carlton’s 13 points and trailed by as much as 36-23 late in the third quarter after Del Valle’s Robert Davis banked home a layup to finish off a 13-2 spurt that spanned the first 6 minutes of ...
