Temple preps for playoff-opening road tilt against 6A power Duncanville

As his 7-3 Temple team prepared for its bi-district playoff clash against two-time defending Class 6A-Division I state champion Duncanville (9-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Panther Stadium, Wildcats ninth-year head coach Scott Stewart on Tuesday was asked what he thinks when watching the No. 1-ranked, talent-laden Panthers on video.

He began to laugh.

“You just giggle,” he said while viewing numerous game highlights on his office computer.

Stewart then was asked if perennial power Duncanville — 38-1 in the last three seasons, with five appearances in the last six 6A D-I state title games — reminds him of any other teams.

“Yes, they do. They remind me of the Kansas City Chiefs, or the Philadelphia Eagles,” he said, grinning. “They’d probably finish second or third in the Big 12.”

On a more serious note, Stewart emphasized that Duncanville’s players — many of them already committed to elite college programs — move at a pace rarely seen at the Texas 6A level.

“They’re hyper-talented, and the game speed is just off the reservation. They’re very, very fast,” Stewart said of the Panthers, who have two of the top 14 players in the ESPN 300 Class of 2025 national rankings: Oregon-committed wide receiver Dakorien Moore at No. 3 and Alabama-committed quarterback Keelon Russell at No. 14. “Watching the tape of Duncanville and (district rival and defending 6A D-II state champ) DeSoto, it just looks...
