The Tem-Cat basketball team overcame a slow start and rebounded to defeat the Waco University Lady Trojans by a score of 32-28 at Wildcat Gym on Friday evening.
The Tem-Cats fell into an early deficit, trailing the Lady Trojans 9-4 going to the second quarter. However, a 3-pointer from Ja'Zaria Jackson and a pair of buckets from Tierney Perkins led a 9-1 second quarter surge as the Tem-Cats overtook the Lady Trojans 13-10 going to the half.
The Tem-Cats extended their lead to 23-16 in the third with Jackson sinking her second 3-pointer on the night and Dawn Smith adding 3 more points and Smith would tally five more points in the fourth as Temple would hold on for the victory.
The Tem-Cats were led in scoring by Dawn Smith with 9 points while Ja'Zaria Jackson had 6 points, Tierney Perkins 5 points and team high 3 assist, Jesse Johnson 4 points and with 2 points apiece were Maciah Morgan, Dejah Thomas, Jayla Govan, and Ava Machuca.
Dejah Thomas provided strong presence on the boards and on the court with a team high 17 rebounds (9 offensive, 8 defensive) and team high 5 steals.
Temple (1-0) will return to action on Tuesday when they will host Pflugerville Weiss at 6:30 pm.
