Temple didn’t have much difficulty scoring against Bryan on Friday night, but the Wildcats found it harder to pull away from the Vikings on the scoreboard.
Until the fourth quarter, that is.
After taking a too-close-for-comfort 35-28 lead into the final period, Temple outscored Bryan 21-6 in the final 12 minutes to run past the Vikings for a 56-34 victory in a crucial District 12-6A showdown at Wildcat Stadium.
Continuing its comeback season from a 1-9 mark in 2023, coach Scott Stewart’s Wildcats improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in 12-6A by avenging Bryan’s 53-25 win at Temple last year. The Wildcats can clinch a playoff berth with a win at Copperas Cove next Friday night.
Temple junior quarterback Champ Mayo produced a stellar performance, going 21-of-28 passing for 369 yards and five touchdowns. Senior Kade Stewart caught a 75-yard TD on the Wildcats’ first snap, and Mayo fired two TD passes each to senior Jack Flentge (seven receptions, 106 yards) and junior Ramauhn Brown (six catches, 115 yards).
The Wildcats were almost as explosive with the rushing attack. The 124-yard effort of senior O’Ryan Peoples was highlighted by his 61-yard touchdown run, and junior Cavalli Nealy damaged Bryan’s defense with 148 of his 151 yards rushing after halftime, including a 23-yard TD scamper that gave Temple a 49-34 advantage with 7 minutes remaining.
