Stewart’s wise words certainly rang true last Friday after Temple led nemesis Hewitt Midway 33-21 early in the fourth quarter before the resilient Panthers charged back to seize a 36-33 win over the Wildcats in a District 12-6A barnburner on homecoming night at Wildcat Stadium.
In the first half, crucial — and largely unnecessary — penalties nullified two long-distance Temple touchdowns: senior cornerback Lezlie Jackson’s 53-yard interception return in the first quarter and a 98-yard kickoff return by senior O’Ryan Peoples in the second. Instead of a potential 14 points, the Wildcats scored only a combined three on those ensuing possessions to trail 21-9 at halftime.
Temple responded with force, dominating the third quarter 17-0 on junior Champ Mayo’s long touchdown passes to junior Ramauhn Brown and senior Christian Tutson before the Wildcats grabbed a 33-21 lead on junior Cavalli Nealy’s 2-yard TD rush 34 seconds into the fourth.
