Under clear skies, Temple, Belton and Lake Belton joined the fray as the area’s final teams to officially kick off football season when Class 5A and 6A teams that held spring drills were given the go-ahead by the University Interscholastic League to start fall camp.
A short burst of rain and lightning caused 1A-4A teams to adjust on the fly last Monday, sending some into nearby gymnasiums to complete their first sanctioned day.
But there was no need for any alterations this time, and Temple head coach Chad President said his team’s initial get-together went off without a hitch.
“Everything ran smoothly equipment-wise and we didn’t have any hiccups or anything holding us up from getting on the field, so that’s always a good day,” said the Wildcats’ first-year head coach who returned to his alma mater last season as offensive coordinator before being promoted to the top spot in January. “A lot of kids were saying they were awake at 3 a.m. A lot of coaches were coming in at 4 a.m....
