The Temple girls got a jump on claiming their third straight team title, the Wildcats were left with work to do, and the boys and girls squads for Belton and Lake Belton got off to strong starts on the opening day of their district track and field meets Wednesday.

At the District 12-6A meet in Copperas Cove, Temple had three gold medalists and 11 athletes register top-four finishes to secure their spots in next week’s area meet. Wednesday’s slate included the field events and 3,200-meter runs, with the finals in the other running events scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. today at Bulldawg Stadium.
