GLEN ROSE, TX — With their season on the line Thursday night, the Temple Wildcats proved they weren't ready to turn in their uniforms just yet. After a tough 11-4 loss in the series opener, Temple bounced back with a commanding 9-4 victory over the Mesquite Horn Jaguars at Glen Rose High School, knotting the Class 6A Bi-District playoff series at one game apiece.

Early Fireworks

The Wildcats made their intentions clear from the jump, striking for three runs in the top of the first inning. Yahir Bocanegra set the tone with a two-RBI double, followed by a Jaden Fuentes line out that brought home a third run.

However, the Jaguars didn't blink. Horn responded in the bottom half of the frame when Zach Medrano laced a double to help tie the game at 3-3, signaling a potential shootout.

Bocanegra Blasts Off

The stalemate didn't last long. In the top of the third, Bocanegra struck again, this time launching a two-run home run to right field. The blast ignited a four-run surge, fueled further by a Horn balk that extended the Wildcat lead to 7-3.

Bocanegra finished the night as the focal point of the Temple offense, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs. He wasn't alone in the hit column, as several Wildcats contributed to the balanced attack:

Xavier Tools: 1-for-3 with a triple and 2 runs scored.
Champ Mayo: 1-for-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.
Francisco Gonzalez: 1-for-2 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.
Jaden Fuentes: 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Dominance on the Mound

While the bats provided the cushion, Francisco Gonzalez provided the stability. Gonzalez earned the win with a gritty six-inning performance. Despite allowing seven hits, he limited the damage to just three earned runs while striking out three.

On the flip side, Medrano took the loss for the Jaguars. Though he struck out six, he struggled to find the zone consistently, surrendering eight runs over three and one-third innings.

The stats tell a story of efficiency versus volume. While Mesquite Horn actually out-hit Temple 7-6—led by multi-hit games from Malachi Youngblood and Michael Chavez—the Wildcats capitalized on every opportunity. Temple showcased elite plate discipline and speed, drawing seven walks and swiping five bases to keep the Jaguar defense under constant pressure.

Winner-Take-All Friday

The momentum has officially shifted back to the Wildcats, but the job isn't finished. The series now moves to a decisive Game 3 to determine who advances in the 6A bracket.

Next Pitch: Friday Night
Location: Whitney High School (Whitney, TX)
Time: 6:30 PM

It’s win or go home for both squads. Based on Thursday’s performance, the Wildcats have the wind at their backs as they look to complete the comeback.
