TEMPLE, Texas — In a high-stakes battle for District 12-6A supremacy, it was the Brenna Thomas show at Tem-Cat Field on Friday evening. Behind a dominant performance in the circle and a self-sustained offensive spark, Thomas led the Temple Tem-Cats to a gritty 2-0 victory over the Copperas Cove Lady Dawgs.
The win breaks a second-place tie in the district standings, moving Temple to 4-1 while Copperas Cove drops to 3-2.
A Duel in the Circle
The evening was defined by elite pitching on both sides. Temple’s Brenna Thomas was masterful, striking out 11 batters and surrendering just five hits over a complete-game seven-inning shutout. Despite walking three, Thomas proved her mettle by pitching out of several high-pressure situations.
Not to be outdone, Copperas Cove’s Janell Gray was equally formidable. Gray struck out 12 Tem-Cats and allowed only one earned run on five hits, keeping the Lady Dawgs within striking distance until the final out.
Tem-Cats Capitalize on Opportunities
Temple broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning. Ava Machuca ignited the rally with a one-out single, followed by Combs reaching on an error. With runners on, London Armour lifted a pop-up to third base that was misplayed, allowing Machuca to cross the plate for a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Thomas decided to take matters into her own hands at the plate. Leading off the inning, the freshman standout crushed a solo home run to left field, doubling the Temple lead and providing all the insurance she would need.
Escaping the Jam
The Lady Dawgs didn't go quietly, placing runners in scoring position throughout the contest. Their biggest threat came in the third inning when a hit-by-pitch, a walk, and an error loaded the bases with only one out. Unfazed, Thomas dialed in to record back-to-back strikeouts to escape the inning unscathed.
Copperas Cove left two runners stranded in the first, fourth, and fifth innings as Thomas continued to find the big pitch when it mattered most.
"Brenna did a great job on the mound pitching out of multiple situations with Lady Dawg runners in scoring position," the Tem-Cats coaching staff noted after the game.
Closing the Door
In the top of the seventh, Thomas quickly retired the first two batters via a groundout and a pop-up. Janell Gray attempted to spark a two-out rally with a double to right-center, but Thomas induced a groundout to second base from Brooklynn Wilson to seal the shutout victory.
