Isaiah Ellis is a serious-minded football player who does not lack for motivation. But as Temple’s standout senior “boom” safety recently walked into defensive coordinator Thomas Rocco’s office for a media interview, Rocco couldn’t resist.
“Who wears number 0? That’s for second-team all-district guys,” a grinning Rocco remarked, attempting to get a reaction from Ellis, the Wildcats’ returning leader with 104 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, six sacks and 21 quarterback hurries.
The good-natured, mild-mannered Ellis took Rocco’s wisecrack in stride then discussed how he felt last Dec. 1 when Temple head coach Chad President informed his players about voting results for the All-District 12-6A team.
After having arguably the best season by a Wildcats defender while playing outside linebacker at 168 pounds, the instinctive, hard-hitting Ellis was surprised to learn that 12-6A’s head coaches had voted him second-team all-district.
