JOSHUA, TX — History was written on the platforms of Joshua High School this Friday as the Texas High School Powerlifting Association (THSPA) hosted its first-ever Unequipped Regional Championships. Among the elite athletes setting the standard for this new era of lifting was senior Javier Agard, who powered his way to a podium finish in a historic performance.
Competing in the highly competitive 242 lb. weight class, Agard secured 4th place in Region II, cementing his name as one of the top "raw" lifters in the state. Unlike traditional equipped lifting, unequipped competition relies solely on the lifter's natural strength without the aid of supportive suits.
Agard’s Medal-Winning Numbers
Agard displayed remarkable consistency across all three lifts, finishing with an impressive 1,265 lb. total. His performance was anchored by a massive pull to close out his session:
Squat: 485 lbs
Bench Press: 280 lbs
Deadlift: 500 lbs
Total Weight Moved: 1,265 lbs
Agard's performance not only earned him a medal but also set a high benchmark for future lifters in this newly sanctioned division.
Looking Ahead: Filmore Takes the Stage
The action in Joshua is far from over. The spotlight shifts tomorrow to the Division 1 (5A/6A) Equipped Regional Championships, where the heavy hitters bring the gear to the platform.
Junior Bradley Filmore is set to represent the squad in the 308 lb. weight class. Filmore enters the meet as a serious contender, looking to dominate the super-heavyweight ranks and punch his ticket to the State Championships.
Lifting for the equipped session is scheduled to begin tomorrow morning at Joshua High School.
