COLLEGE STATION - The Tem-Cat softball team played a trio of games on Friday in the Texas Leadoff Classic in College Station. Shaking off an 0-2 start to the season, the Tem-Cats won a pair of games with victories over Lewisville 7-0 and Klein Cain 9-5 before falling to Angleton by a score of 6-4.
In Game 1, the Tem-Cats shut out Lewisville by a score of 7-0 as Kaitlyn Teeters earned the win going six innings and giving up zero runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking two.
Offensively, the Tem-Cats picked up 12 hits on the day with Brooke Knox, Madyson Combs and Ava Machuca each having multiple hits.
Temple jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Madyson Combs highlighted the inning with a RBI double.
In the fourth, Teeters helped herself out with a RBI double to extend the Temple lead to 3-0.
Then in the fifth, the Tem-Cats distanced themselves from Lewisville with three more runs. Madyson Combs scoring on a wild pitch, Kaegan Yepma with an RBI triple and Ava Machuca with an RBI single. When the dust settled, Temple led 6-0 after five.
In the sixth, Brooke Knox drove home the final run with a line drive double to center that scored Jordyn Valdez who led off the inning with a single.
Brooke Knox led the offensive surge going 3-4 at the plate with 2 doubles, an RBI and a run scored while Ava Machuca was 2-3 with an RBI, run scored and Madyson Combs was 2-3 with a pair of doubles, RBI and run scored.
Kaegan Yepma went 1-3 with a triple, RBI and run scored; Kaitlyn Teeters 1-3, double and RBI; Jordyn Valdez 1-3 run scored; Nanai Rubio 1-3, RBI, run scored and Lilliana Gandara 1-4.
In Game 2 of the day, Temple defeated Klein Cain 9-5 to even their season record to 2-2.
Brooke Knox earned the win on the mound for Temple going 6 innings and giving up one earned one earned run on four hits while striking out two and walking none.
Saniya Maxwell led the Tem-Cats on the offensive side of the ball going 3-4 at the plate with 2 RBI and a run scored.
Maxwell started the scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to give Temple an early 1-0 lead. However, in the top of the 2nd, Cain responded with 4 runs, three of which were not earned.
Temple quickly responded in the bottom of the second with a 2-run single from Lilliana Gandara, RBI single from Maxwell and a fielder’s choice from Maxwell.
Temple tacked on three more runs in the fourth and a sac fly from Brooke Knox in the fifth to extend the Tem-Cat lead to 9-4.
Klein Cain would scratch out a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI double but Knox closed out the threat with a dropped third strike to end the game.
Game 3 saw Temple rally from a 4-0 deficit in the sixth to draw even at 4-4 going to the seventh. In the seventh, Angleton hit a 2-out 2-run home to take a 6-4 lead. However, in the bottom of the seventh, Temple response was limited to one batter as the game reached its time limit. This the Tem-Cats came out on the short end of a 6-4 final.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Temple pulled to within 4-3 on an RBI double from Brooke Knox, an RBI single from Madyson Combs and another RBI double from Nani Rubio. Ava Machuca pulled the Tem-Cats even at 4-4 with a sac fly that scored Rubio.
Kaitlyn Teeters took the loss for Temple going 6 1/3 innings giving up 6 runs and 11 hits while striking out three and walking only one.
Temple picked up 8 hits with Jordyn Valdez going 2-4 with a triple and run scored, Brooke Knox was 1-3 with a double and RBI, Nani Rubio 1-3 with a double, RBI, run scored; Saniya Maxwell 1-3 with a double.
Madyson Combs, Kaegan Yepma and Ava Machuca each went 1-3 with Machuca and Combs picking up an RBI.
Temple (3-2) will return to play on Saturday with a pair of games at Bryan Rudder H.S. Temple will face Bridgeland at 1:00 and Bryan Rudder at 3:00.
