Valdez has big day as Tem-Cats go 1-1 at Hays Tournament

The Tem-Cat softball team went 1-1 on Thursday as they opened play in the Heart of Hays County Tournament in Buda. The Tem-Cats fell to Flour Bluff 10-5 in their opener but rallied late to defeat SA Churchill by a score of 7-5.

Senior Jordyn Valdez had a huge day at the plate as she went 5-7 with 3 doubles, homerun, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI.

In their opener with Flour Bluff, the Tem-Cats fell by a score of 10-5 as they collected seven hits in the contest. Jordyn Valdez was 2-3 with a double and 2 runs scored while Madyson Combs was 2-3 with a run scored and Kaegan Yepma as 1-3 with a triple.

Game 2 saw the Tem-Cats fall behind SA Churchill 3-0 before mounting a seven run rally in the top of the sixth.

The inning was keyed by a 2-run RBI double from Glory Foreman to the game at 3-3 and Jordyn Valdez with a 2-run home run to center to cap the seven run rally.

The Chargers tried to rally themselves with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Brooke Knox worked out of the jam to end the game after six innings.

Temple collected 12 hits on the afternoon led by Jordyn Valdez going 3-4 a pair of doubles, home run, 2 RBI and a run scored.

Madyson Combs went 2-4 with a run scored, Brooke Knox 2-4 and Kaegan Yepma 2-3 with a run scored.

Brooke Knox earned the win on the mound going 6.0 innings giving up 4 earned runs on nine hits while striking out five.

Temple (4-4-1) returns to play on Friday with a matchup with Hendrickson at 1:00 and Hays at 3:00.
