Temple clearly desires to earn district championships and playoff wins, the achievements that add gold football trophies to its display case.
However, accomplishing those things isn’t easy. After collecting a plentiful haul of gold balls from 2013-21, the Wildcats haven’t recorded a league title or a postseason victory since they gained both in 2021.
Temple ninth-year head coach Scott Stewart doesn’t like to discuss district crowns and playoff spots during the season, preferring that his team focus on daily and weekly improvement. But after the Wildcats (7-2, 4-1 District 12-6A) clinched a Class 6A Division I playoff berth last Friday with a 42-14 win at Copperas Cove, they have an opportunity to capture a share of the league championship when they battle the first-place Harker Heights Knights (7-2, 5-0) in the regular-season finale at 7 p.m. Thursday at Wildcat Stadium.
“We set goals at the beginning of the season, then I leave them on the shelf.
