TEMPLE - The Temple High Tem-Cats varsity girls basketball team opened their season on Friday night at Wildcat Gym, hosting the Buda Johnson Jaguars in front of an energetic home crowd. Despite demonstrating flashes of high-energy play and finishing strong in the final quarter, Temple was unable to overcome a cold second quarter, dropping a 52-38 decision to Buda Johnson to open the campaign at 0-1.
Game Breakdown
Both teams came out firing in an entertaining opening period. Avery Perez provided the early spark for Temple, scoring 6 of the team's 9 first-quarter points to keep the Tem-Cats within striking distance as Buda Johnson took an 11-9 lead into the second.
The Jaguars asserted control during the second frame, utilizing tight perimeter defense to restrict Temple to a lone basket from Aniyah Brumet. Buda Johnson matched its first-quarter effort with another 11-point output, building a 22-13 advantage at the halftime break.
Temple refound its rhythm coming out of the locker room in the third quarter. Brumet began to take over, netting 5 points in the period—highlighted by a smooth 3-pointer—while Aaliyah Paul knocked down a key 3-pointer of her own. However, Buda Johnson kept pace with 14 points to hold a 36-24 lead heading into the fourth.
