Temple DB Martin draws support, advice from many family members

Houston Martin never needs to look far for motivation, support, advice and constructive criticism.

Whenever Temple’s emerging junior strong safety/nickel back plays a football game, his father, Joey, watches intently from near the 25-yard line on the Wildcats sideline. As the Temple boys basketball head coach, the elder Martin gets an even closer view of his son, the team’s starting point guard the past two seasons.

“My dad likes standing on the sideline and being right there,” said the 5-foot-11, 178-pound Houston Martin, who’s made 41 tackles (24 solo) and forced a fumble for Temple (5-2, 2-1) entering its District 12-6A battle with Bryan (3-4, 1-2) at 7:30 tonight at Wildcat Stadium. “He’s never been on a football staff, but he’s probably the biggest basketball-football guy I’ve seen with his knowledge and what he thinks.”

Another keen observer of Martin’s performance is his 25-year-old brother, Sam, a former football and basketball standout at Burleson who’s set to finish his hoops career as a muscular 6-foot guard and graduate student for NCAA Division II Westminster University in Salt Lake City.
