His plans and immediate future changed abruptly after his grandmother Patty Mayo’s serious health situation prompted Champ’s parents to decide to move closer to her home in Killeen, where they resided until Champ was 9.
To help Mayo absorb the unexpected move, his parents enrolled him at Temple High School, whose principal is his uncle, Dr. Jason Mayo. The principal’s son, sophomore Jase Mayo, is Champ’s cousin and plays golf and football.
“It was probably a month before we decided, ‘Hey, we’re going to do this,’” Champ recalled Tuesday. “My mom and dad said, ‘We think it might be smart to move down and be with your grandma. We’re going to put you at Temple. I said, ‘Family is first for me, so let’s get it done and be with her.’”
