After Temple quarterback Kylan Basinger sprinted for third-quarter touchdowns of 56 and 48 yards, a determined Wildcats team that entered Friday night with a 1-5 record led Harker Heights 35-21 going into the final period and had a breakthrough victory in their sights at Wildcat Stadium.
However, the Knights hadn’t earned 18 consecutive District 12-6A victories and four straight league titles by being physically or emotionally fragile, and they demonstrated that poise and winning pedigree in the fourth quarter to deny Temple’s upset bid.
After Brandon Fowlkes Jr.’s 25-yard touchdown run a minute into the fourth, Harker Heights got Hudson Humble’s game-tying 4-yard TD pass to Ryan Taylor with 1:56 remaining before Ar’Keevian Thomas intercepted Basinger’s short throw and returned it 35 yards for a score just 10 seconds later as the Knights charged back to deal the Wildcats a heartbreaking 42-35 defeat.
