“Next man up” is a commonly used phrase in football, and it definitely applied to the Temple Wildcats when they played at Round Rock in Week 2 of last season.

Senior quarterback Champ Mayo suffered a right collarbone injury 2 minutes into the first quarter and was forced to leave the game. If 15-year-old sophomore backup Kylan Basinger entered that Friday night expecting simply to watch the action from Temple’s sideline, the gridiron gods had other plans.

Without warning, Basinger immediately had to buckle the chinstrap on his helmet, run onto the field and direct a Wildcats offense filled with players 2 years older than him.
