HEWITT — Although Temple’s offense couldn’t break through in the first half Friday night, the Wildcats’ defense performed well enough to keep them in contention and contain nemesis Hewitt Midway to a 10-0 halftime lead.

Temple limited Panthers star running back Lathan Whisenton to eight carries for 30 yards in the first two quarters and kept him from scoring. But after a light drizzle turned into hard rainfall during the intermission, Midway used an overwhelming deluge of hard-charging runs by its Notre Dame-committed workhorse to pull away from the upset-minded Wildcats.

Midway’s first 13 offensive snaps of the third period were Whisenton rushes that produced 120 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown and an 11-yard dash that set up quarterback Cort Strickland’s 1-yard TD run as the Panthers grabbed a 24-0 lead en route to defeating Temple 33-13 at soggy Panther Stadium.
