TEMPLE — The Temple High School boys varsity cross country team officially kicked off the 2026 season on Friday morning, hosting a highly competitive field at the Temple Wildcat Invitational at Lions Park. Under the morning sun, the Wildcats battled strong local and regional contenders to secure an eighth-place team finish.

Vargas Leads the Wildcat Pack

Junior Joe Vargas delivered the standout performance of the morning for the host team, securing a stellar top-10 individual finish. Vargas crossed the line in 10th place overall with a time of 17:09.91, earning 9 points for the Wildcats' team score.

Following Vargas was freshman Easton Williams, who made a strong varsity debut by clocking in at 18:27.61 to finish 34th overall. Senior Titus Tamez crossed the line next for Temple, posting a time of 19:07.66 (44th overall). Rounding out the scoring five for the Wildcats were seniors Nathaniel Bowker and Gabe De la Cruz, who finished back-to-back with times of 20:04.40 (61st overall) and 20:09.54 (62nd overall), respectively.

As a team, the Temple boys finished with 182 total points. The squad registered an average team time of 18:59 over the three-mile course with a spread of 2:59 between their first and fifth finishers.

Individual and Team Champions Crowned

In the individual standings, senior Emiliano Quintero of Killeen High School claimed the individual crown, pacing the field with a dominant time of 16:14.42. Killeen Harker Heights junior Blake Zimmerman finished as the runner-up at 16:28.98, and Lake Belton senior Wyatt Potts took third place with a time of 16:31.25.

In the team competition, Hendrickson High School captured the team title with a low score of 57 points. The Hawks put together an impressive showing, averaging 17:15 per runner with a tight 1:04 spread. Lake Belton finished in second place with 75 points and an average time of 17:25, while Killeen Harker Heights claimed third place with 99 points and an average of 17:46.

The Temple Wildcats will look to build on their season-opening performances next week. They will travel to College Station on Saturday, August 22, to compete in the Coach Giese Invitational.
