Temple downs Harker Heights to move step closer to playoff bid

BARTLETT — Temple’s motto all year has been taking things one game at a time, and that approach helped the Wildcats in a big way Wednesday night.

After waiting nearly 24 hours for its penultimate District 12-6A matchup against second-place Harker Heights because of inclement weather, the Wildcats used a sixth-inning surge to rally past the Knights to post an important 6-3 victory at Bulldog Field.

Temple (8-19-2, 6-5) led Copperas Cove by a-half game for fourth place entering the match. The Wildcats now can clinch a playoff berth with a win over Killeen Shoemaker in Friday’s regular-season finale.

“We’ve been working on that the entire season, just having that energy to come back from a deficit, post runs, put it back together pitch by pitch,” said first-year Temple coach Stacy Largent, whose squad played as the home team at Bartlett’s field after Tuesday’s rainy weather brought about a venue change. “Pitch by pitch and not chasing things out of the zone is what they’ve been working on and getting better...
