Temple was assured of its postseason fate ahead of its regular-season finale Friday night, though the Tem-Cats still aimed to enter next week with a head full of steam.
Second-place Harker Heights sought the same momentum, and ultimately found it behind the arm of Janelly Rios and the bat of Kamryn Records.
Rios struck out three and walked none while scattering three hits in a shutout, and Records put the Lady Knights ahead with an opposite-field, two-run triple in the fifth to help Heights spoil Temple’s senior night by posting a 2-0 victory in the teams’ District 12-6A finale at Tem-Cat Field.
With a two-game lead over idle Killeen Shoemaker for fourth place entering the last wave of league games, the Tem-Cats (12-14-1, 6-6) knew they will play next week regardless of the outcome in their home finale.
