Operating at left defensive end from the Temple 34-yard line, Agard noticed that Midway’s right tackle dipped and ran past him instead of blocking him. Sensing a screen pass, Agard halted his rush maneuver and retreated toward the inside. Sure enough, Panthers sophomore Jeyden Fields-Vaughn caught a middle screen near the line of scrimmage and the 5-foot-10, 245-pound Agard was ready. He immediately hit the speedy 163-pound running back squarely in the midsection, driving him backward and into the turf for a 2-yard loss.
“I feel like I’m an intelligent player. That one play against (Fields-Vaughn), I wasn’t ready for that, really, because I thought it was another dropback pass,” Agard explained Tuesday. “Then I saw the O-lineman dip down and they didn’t do that the play before, so I thought, ‘Something’s probably coming my way.’ And then I look up and (Fields-Vaughn) is catching the ball, looking right at me. It was just not a good play for him. That felt good, for sure.”
