With five regular-season games remaining, it might seem as if the Temple Wildcats have plenty of time left to achieve what they desire. Although that is true to some extent, they also have a very apparent sense of urgency.

One big reason for that was Temple’s 31-28 loss to Killeen Shoemaker — on a field goal as time expired — in its District 12-6A opener Sept. 26 at Wildcat Stadium, snapping the Wildcats’ 12-game win streak against the Grey Wolves.

Another reason is that the next game for Temple (4-1) — which had its open date last week — is another difficult challenge in the form of star running back Lathan Whisenton and nemesis Hewitt Midway (5-1 overall, 1-1 district), whose Panthers won 66-47 at Shoemaker last week and will host the Wildcats at 7 p.m. Friday at Panther Stadium.

The Temple-Midway winner will remain in prime contention for the 12-6A championship and seize the inside track to earn the district’s No. 1 seed for the Class 6A Division I playoffs and the accompanying first-round home game.
