Temple falls to Shoemaker on field goal as time expires

While Temple and first-year head coach Chad President brought a 4-0 record into Friday night’s District 12-6A opener, Killeen Shoemaker ninth-year head coach Toby Foreman never had beaten Temple. In fact, the Grey Wolves had lost 12 straight meetings with the Wildcats since Shoemaker last prevailed in 2006.

In a game that had the feeling that the team with the final possession likely would win, Foreman and Shoemaker finally broke through against nemesis Temple.

The Wildcats created a 28-28 deadlock on Cavalli Nealy’s 2-yard touchdown run with 3:49 remaining, but the Grey Wolves responded by getting a crucial 25-yard pass from Reshard Hicks Jr. to Jihad McCoy before Joushua Narvaez Torres kicked a 28-yard field goal as time expired to lift Shoemaker to a dramatic 31-28 victory over Temple at Wildcat Stadium.

“It was two great teams and it came down to the end. Shoemaker had the ball last and made more plays. Every time they went up we responded, and I’m proud of that. It stinks for us, but we’ll use this as a learning tool and get better from it and keep moving on,” said President, whose squad has its open date next week before it travels to play fellow 4-1 ...
